What is Artificial Intelligence and It's Importance
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is the technology that enables computers and digital devices to perform tasks like learning, reading, writing, speaking, seeing, creating, playing, analyzing, making recommendations, and other things that humans do.
AI has passed through many phases of promotion, but even for skeptics, the release of OpenAI's GPT (Generative Pre-trained Transformer) marks a significant milestone. While previous successes of Artificial Intelligence (AI) were mainly in computer vision, the next leap is in Natural Language Processing (NLP). And it's not just human language: generative models can also interpret software code, molecules, natural images, and many other types of data. Some no-code interfaces empower people with non-coding skills to use visual interfaces and drag-and-drop controls for quick and skillful creation and modification of applications, while the actual code remains hidden in the background.
While definitions of artificial intelligence for the past few decades have varied, John McCarthy proposed one of the most comprehensive definitions: "It is the science and engineering of making intelligent machines, especially intelligent computer programs. It's related to the similar task of using computers to understand human intelligence, but AI does not have to confine itself to biologically observable methods."
Applications of this technology are growing every day, and we are just beginning to explore possibilities. However, as the use of AI tools in business proliferates, ethical discussions have become significantly important.
Types of Artificial Intelligence:
- Weak AI, also known as Narrow AI or Artificial Narrow Intelligence (ANI), is trained and focused on specific tasks. Weak AI currently dominates most AI applications around us. "Narrow" might be a more accurate descriptor for this type of AI because it can do anything but is weak: it enables some very powerful applications, such as Apple's Siri, Amazon's Alexa, IBM Watson™, and self-driving vehicles.
- Strong AI is built from Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) and Artificial Superintelligence (ASI). AGI, or General AI, is a theoretical concept of AI where a machine will have the intelligence of a human being; it will be self-aware with consciousness capable of problem-solving, learning, and planning for the future. ASI, also known as Supervisory AI, will surpass human intelligence and capabilities. While strong AI is still entirely theoretical and has no practical examples today, it doesn't mean that AI researchers aren't also exploring its development. Meanwhile, the best example of ASI might come from science fiction, like HAL from 2001: A Space Odyssey.
Artificial Intelligence Importance:
There are several ways to define artificial intelligence, but the most important discussion revolves around what AI enables you to do.
- End-to-End Efficiency: AI streamlines operations and enhances resource utilization within your organization, resulting in reduced costs. It can automate complex processes and predict maintenance needs by forecasting future requirements, thus minimizing downtime.
- Improved Accuracy and Decision-making Ability: AI empowers employees to enhance the quality, effectiveness, and creativity of decisions through rich analysis and predictive capabilities.
- Intelligent Offerings: Since machines think differently than humans, they can quickly uncover gaps and opportunities in the market, enabling you to introduce new products, services, channels, and business models faster and with higher quality than previously possible.
- Empowered Employees: AI can handle mundane tasks while employees spend time completing high-value tasks. By fundamentally altering the way work is done and accelerating development, AI is estimated to increase labor productivity. Additionally, AI can also uncover the incredible potential of disabled talents, aiding all workers in advancing.
- Better Customer Service: Continuous machine learning provides a steady stream of 360-degree customer insights for hyper-personalization. From 24/7 chatbots to rapid help desk routing, businesses can use AI to provide high-touch experiences that gather real-time insights and enhance retention, adoption, and overall satisfaction.
AI is utilized in many ways, but the prevailing truth is that your AI strategy is your business strategy. To maximize returns on AI investment, identify your business priorities and then determine how AI can assist.
